The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
